More about Monkleigh House
Monkleigh House comprises of a major part of the former Monkleigh Rectory and is a Grade II listed Georgian building of historical interest which is believed to date from 1808 when it is believed to have been built by John Saltern-Willet for his brother Charles W Willet who was Rector of Monkleigh about that time.
In the South Eastern corner of the gardens, there is a long ancient historic walk lined with laurel, beech and oak trees known as the Church Walk. This is quite possibly the walk that Charles W Willet would have taken to the church to carry out his duties as rector. It now terminates into a Secret Garden.
The house is not built with all straight lines, having a large strong bay at the front, the rooms that have this bay in them are the dining room and the Master bedroom above it. All the rooms have been tastefully decorated and decorated to keep within the Georgian giving a sense of stepping back in time as you enter through the vestibule.
The windows are high, wide and allow a lot of light in, whereas the view from most of the house of over the private gardens, over 1 and half acres, where your children can run and play in total safety whilst you sit on the patio, watching the sun sinking behind the Devon hills and sipping locally grown wine or cider and eating local fresh farm food.
Monkleigh House has wonderful nooks and crannies to explore, such as pannelled doors, marble fireplaces, moulded cornices, ceiling roses, as well as gothic windows complete with window seats and shutters, so if you stay in winter you can set games for the family to play, whilst in the evening eat hot buttered crumpets with local strawberry jam in front of the roaring fire.
There are quiet corners where you can sit and read a book, perhaps about local history ready for the next days explorations.
Wisteria climbs the outside of the building alongside of clematis and honeysuckle, the perfumes enveloping the house into a time when natures perfumes where reveered. One side of Monkleigh House leads onto a lawned areas with formal rose beds and more of those rural views, and here there is a Ha Ha, seperating it from the surrounding fields.
A Cobbled Terrace runs all the way around the house and a clematis clad pergola leads off from the kitchen/living room onto another terraced seating area and lawned garden surrounded by mature trees and shrubs, behind which lies the wood store for those colder winter evenings.
Hidden in the garden is a timber garden house, complete with seating and exercise bike, so if you eat too many Devon Cream Teas, you can always work them off in secret.
