Ever wondered if there there was any magic left in the world? Well look no further than the Gnome Reserve!

For a completely unique 100% fun experience, simultaneously 100% ecologically interesting, with an extra 100% wonder and magic mixed in, visit The Gnome Reserve.

Set amid truly rural countryside between Bideford and Bude just 7 miles from the Devon Cornwall border. the 4 acre Reserve comprises woodland, stream, 30 yard pond, meadow and garden – home to 1000+ gnomes and pixies, and about 250 labelled species of wild flowers, herbs, grasses and ferns.

Gnome hats are loaned free of charge together with fishing rods, so you don’t embarrass the gnomes! Take your cameras and embarrass the family with some truly memorable photos for the family album!

The children will love it because there is so much for them to discover from a woodpecker in a tree to a pixie flitting over clumps of comfrey. Recommended also for adults whose sophistication can have robbed them of a freshness of vision…The Gnome Reserve will rejuvenate you!

`Tarka the Otter’ tells of the “joyful water life and death in the country of the two rivers” of an otter born beside the River Torridge not far from Bideford. Tarka travelled widely throughout north Devon and his journeys, experiences and adventures are vividly described in the book based on actual locations which have changed little since it was written and can still be seen today.

Monkleigh House makes a good central base to stay whilst exploring the Tark Trail.

Set into a steep hillside, Clovelly is one of the most famous villages in the world. The single cobbled high street winds its way down the hillside through traditional whitewashed cottages festooned with fuchsias and geraniums.

Unusually, the village is privately owned and has been by the Hamlyn family since 1738 because of this the Lower part of the village was saved from development by the family. The policy of the Clovelly estate has maintained – against all the odds – this picture postcard village as a living village. There are no Holiday cottages allowed in the main village, and the mode of transport is either sledges for the Friday deliveries, or donkeys for the visiting tourists.

“Suddenly a hot gleam of sunlight fell upon the white cottages, with their grey steaming roofs and little scraps of garden courtyard, and lighting up the wings of the gorgeous butterflies which fluttered from the woodland down to the garden.” A quote from author Charles Kingsley from over 150 years ago and since then the village has hardly changed.

Traffic is banned from the high street with visitors parking at the top of the hill adjacent to the Visitor Centre.

Bideford was once described as ‘the little white town’ by the 20th century author Charles Kinglsey, he of the famed Water Babies book. The quaint town, with its pannier market, borders the Rier Torridge and was once an important port. it is not far from the beaches that are washed by the Atlantic Ocean.
Boats still put out from Bideford, included amongst them are fishing vessels on their way to the Atlantic, sailing ships with their tall masts and the regular ferry to Lundy Island. Together with its beautiful park, two bridges and variety of shops and entertaiment Bideford makes for a lovely town to visit.

Lundy Island lies in the Bristol Channel, about 11 miles off the coast of North Devon. Three miles long and half a mile wide, this granite outcrop rises 400 feet above sea level and is a place of outstanding natural beauty, with tremendous views of England, Wales and the Atlantic. There are three lighthouses (two in use), a castle, church, shop, tavern, working farm, several handsome houses and cottages and a population of about 18.

Lundy offers a very rare experience. It is large enough to have a genuine life of its own, which visitors can share and enjoy, but small and far enough away to be a world apart and unspoilt. Activities on Lundy range from the adventurous, such as rock climbing or diving in the Marine Nature Reserve, to the more gentle pursuits of birdwatching, walking, socialising at the Marisco Tavern or simply relaxing in this remote and tranquil place.

The wealth of marine life which surrounds the island of Lundy remained largely undiscovered until the development of the aqualung allowed marine biologists to study the seabed at first hand. It soon became apparent that there was an amazing array of marine animals and plants to be found within a small area of seabed. One reason for this is because of the wide variety of underwater habitats which exists around the island. These range from steep cliffs and boulder slopes, sand-filled gullies and canyons, to extensive plains of mud and gravel.
